Thailand Unique brand offers bags of edible tarantulas for sale. They ship internationally.
These bags contain one old-world edible Tarantula (Cyriopagopus albostriatus, previously Haplopelma Albostriatum), dehydrated and salted. They come from sustainable sources where young tarantulas are nurtured and released into the wild to replace wild-caught tarantulas.
The Tarantula in this bag measures approximately 6-7 cm and weighs 3-4 grams after dehydration, although the Tarantula’s size and weight may vary in each pack.
Please note: The Tarantula’s legs are tucked in during drying to prevent breaking. They are very fragile once dried. Therefore, they may appear smaller than tarantulas with fully extended legs. We do our best to pack each Tarantula carefully to avoid damage. However, breakage during shipping can happen.
Cooking instructions: This edible Tarantula is ready to eat from the bag. You can eat every part, but be careful of the sharp fangs. Some people prefer to remove the tiny fine hairs before eating. You can do this by holding over a gas flame or placing it in the oven at high heat for a few minutes. Haplopelma Albostriatum Tarantulas are old-world tarantulas and don’t have any urticating hairs. So there is no danger in eating them. We deactivate the small amount of venom during the cooking process. Some people discard the abdomen because it can taste a little bitter. The best parts to eat are the body and legs.
What do they taste like? The meat tastes like a mix of cod and chicken. The fresh version contrasts texture from a crispy exterior to a soft center. In comparison, the dried version is like soft jerky in texture. The legs have a small amount of flesh, while the head and body contain the most delicate white meat. However, the abdomen is often not consumed, as it contains a brown paste consisting of organs, possibly eggs, and excrement. Some people call it a delicacy, while others recommend not eating it.
